In 1938 a flying school was constructed at what used to be Lake Brockzetel, but it was quickly abandoned a year later when the mililtary showed an interest in the location.
Construction of Fliegerhorst Brockzetel began in 1941 to create an Operational field (German: Einsatzafen) for the Luftwaffe.
Much of the construction was done by forced labour: prisoners from France and the Netherlands.
Problems with the soil meant the airfield was not yet finished by the end of the war, instead only the runway and dispersals were completed.
Additionally living quarters, a fuelstation and ammunition dump were constructed.
Around 1943 the construction af a concrete runway was started, in order to create a diversion field for nearby Fliegerhorst Wittmundhafen

During the war the airfield was bombed several times by Allied bombers.
After the war the airfield was demolished.
In the 1950s the site was used by the RAF as an air defense radar site
In 1960 the Luftwaffe took over the radar station, which they use to this day.
Until 1995 the radar station was home to a Sector Operations Center (SOC1) for 2ATAF.

On the site of the former airfield a glider club is active now.
Severeal buildings of the former airfield still exist on the southeat side of the airfield.
From the air the oulines of the main runway is still recognisable.
